Pesticide Education, Training and Certification

Pesticide Applicator and Vendor Training and Certification in Canada

Pesticide applicators and vendors must be certified in order to sell or apply pesticides in Canada. Certification programs are the responsibility of the provincial and territorial governments and are based on the Standard for Pesticide Education, Training and Certification in Canada.

The Standard for Pesticide Education, Training and Certification in Canada (referred to as the National Standard) consists of a series of documents that outline the structure and criteria for applicator and vendor certfication programs in Canada. It is made up of 14 documents divided into the following three parts:

- Framework (Part 1):
- Applicator Basic Knowledge Requirements (Part 2):

- Vendor/Dispenser Basic Knowledge Requirements (Part 3):

The FPT Working Group on Pesticide Education, Training and Certification

The Working Group on Pesticide Education, Training and Certification (WGPETC) is responsible for the National Standard and related pesticide education initiatives.
WGPETC is comprised of federal, provincial and territorial representatives involved in pesticide regulation or education and reports to the

Federal/Provincial/Territorial Commitee on Pest Management & Pesticides

This Brochure provides a quick summary of the National Standard including information on its use, components, benefits and development.

Canadian Pesticides Applicators' Core Training

Fundamental knowledge for the effective and safe use of pesticides is now available online.

This course, along with the special category material, will prepare you for the core portion of various certification exams.

This course teaches the core knowledge required for certification as a pesticide applicator in Canada. It is also a valuable resource for anybody applying pesticides. The course introduces the practices of Integrated Pest Management and the foundational knowledge to prevent and control pests while having the least impact on the environment.

This online course has been developed by Open School BC for the Ministry of Environment and is based on the 2011 edition of the Canadian Pesticide Education Program’s Applicator Core Manual (the Applicator Core Manual required to take the certification exam is purchased separately).

The course allows 8 weeks to complete the approximately 10 hours of online material. Please note that additional Applicator Core Manual readings are required in addition to the online activities.

It is important to note that while learners will receive a printable statement of completion for Applicators’ Core Training, completion of this course does not certify pesticides applicators. This course prepares candidates on a significant number of outcomes that will be tested on the provincial certification exam. Candidates also need to study training material specific to they type of work the will be doing.
